I have applied for a partner post at Eaglescliffe Medical Practice. I have signed up to the Medics Money partnership programme to help me in this!
-
I want to be credible as a GP. I have had very little training in the ‘business’ side of things and so if I can improve on this and help myself then surely the better
-
It is a year long course ran over Zoom. All of the sessions are recorded and so can come and go as needed.
-
£3000 - but this can be covered by the NHS new to partnership scheme.
-
Medics Money is made up of two GPs who run the Medics Money Podcasts. They have enlisted a wide variety of specialists to teach on the course.
It is worth it?
My initial thoughts on why I chose to do the course and who I think it could be helpful for.
Lesson 1 - my thoughts
A really great start to the course. Some fascinating lectures looking at three key ares
1) Introduction and tax traps
2) Utilisation of technology in GP
3) Tips and tricks for new GP Partners.
Interview
I was delighted that both Ed and Tommy agreed to be interviewed by myself!
Here we have a quick chat through how things are going and the course itself.
Understanding the business of GP
This is starting to go through the basics of the practice and there were three main points to take away
1) Different types of contract
2) The importance of QOF
3) Revenue streams
They are also running a second course starting in February, so be sure to check out there website to sign up.
Understanding the accounts.
A bit like anatomy and physiology in understanding medicine. You need to have an understanding of the accounts to fully appreciate the bigger picture
A skeleton of the accounts - what to look out for. This was brilliant, I had our practice accounts to hand and so could finally make sense.
Fraud represented something I had never thought of and raised the point that everyone who committed fraud had a reason. To prevent this, checks and balances should be in place.
Finally, premises. Interesting one about the benefits vs owning or renting the property. Clearly finance is a huge element and so knowing what drives different partners is important.
